According to a study by the Pew Research Center (http://pewresearch.org) A majority (59%) of Americans have some kind of retirement plan apart from
Social Security, but nearly four-in-ten (38%) adults and 32% of all workers say they have no retirement plan other than Social Security. Among those who are not employed and not currently retired, nearly two-thirds (63%) say they have no retirement plan other than Social Security.
Darn few Americans have traditional pensions anymore. According to an Associated Press article: "In 1985, 89% of Fortune 100 companies offered traditional pension plans, but that had fallen to 51% by 2004, according to Watson Wyatt Worldwide, a human resources consulting firm. Some 11% of the plans in the Fortune 1000 were frozen or terminated for new employees, up from 5% in 2001."
